Opera Idaho Commissions Theatre Consultants to Design Plans for a New Theatre in Boise

BOISE, February 14, 2018 — Opera Idaho is pleased to announce that it has contracted top theatre design firm Auerbach Pollock Friedlander out of San Francisco to begin a planning study for a new performing arts venue in Boise. This contract provides for needs assessment, a thorough consideration of possible Egyptian Theatre renovations, and finally a proposed design of a major community performing arts facility to serve the growing needs of local arts organizations well into the 21st century. This new or renovated facility would serve as a permanent home for Opera Idaho.

Allowing Opera Idaho to grow in its artistic endeavors and increase its audience base, while simultaneously contributing to the overall entertainment experience in Boise, is an integral part of this project. The plan calls for a 900 -1200-seat theatre with an orchestra pit. While no location for any new venue has been determined, it has long been Opera Idaho’s desire for a theatre in downtown Boise. The historic Egyptian Theatre, built in 1927 and renovated in 1979 and again in 1999, is located at Capitol and Main and is currently Opera Idaho’s home theatre.

The study is funded by Opera Idaho, Esther Simplot, and the Hardy Foundation, which owns The Egyptian Theatre. Auerbach Pollock Friedlander will begin the process by meeting next month with key Opera Idaho personnel, the Hardy Foundation and other stakeholders within the community. The final study is planned to be completed in early June 2018 and will include a conceptual drawing for a non-site specific venue.
