In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. The program started with Opera in a Box, an introduction to opera. Since then, we’ve upgraded to real operas, albeit abridged and rewritten for our target audience. We have toured the Treasure Valley with Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Massenet’s Cinderella. We’re hoping to visit your school!
This fall, Opera Idaho will be touring with Opera for the Young’s adaptation of The Elixir of Love. In this version the action is moved to Lonesome Gluch, a dusty town in America’s Old West. Miss Addy, Jimmy Reno, and Bill Corey form the love triangle of the story, with Dr. Dulcamara appearing as the “snake oil” peddler who sells the love potion (root beer in disguise!). The Elixir of Love’s playful melodies and comical characters delight youngsters, while thematic points concerning coming of age, facing the trials and tribulation of life, and learning to forgive generate thoughtful discussion.
Weeks ahead of the show you’ll receive a teaching packet containing a teacher’s guide, a student prep handbook, the libretto, sheet music, a tutorial CD and cast recording, as well as online access to teaching and student preparation materials. We also encourage all students to learn the music and sing from their seats. Sixteen of your students will perform onstage as the Justice of the Peace and the Soldier, as well as the “Citizens of Lonesome Gluch”.
We have planned on two performances per day (10:00 am & 1:00 pm) for a total of thirty options from which to choose. If you have a piano that we can use for the performances, we would be eternally grateful, but we do have our electronic keyboard if one’s not available.
Let us know your no more than three (3) preferred dates and whether you’d prefer a morning or afternoon slot. Once all the requests are in and we’ve set our tour schedule, we will be contacting you with the date and time of your performance.
Opera Idaho Artistic Administrator Nik Dumas will be available to help you with the musical requirements.
